Better  know for his spy novels, Ken Follet has two works that are characterized as historical fiction.  I have read Pillars of the earth.  It provided me with insights into aspects of the human condition that I would not have been able to "see" in my daily travels.

 The other historical fiction of his that I have not read yet is, "World Without End"
